This secondary battery is provided with a positive electrode containing an active material, a negative electrode, and an electrolyte. The active material contains multiple active material particles, which are primary particles, and a carbon material. The active material particles contain a polyanionic compound. The carbon material contains a first carbon material that is present on the surfaces of the active material particles, and a second carbon material that is present between the active material particles to which the first carbon material is provided. The ratio (B/A) between the total carbon content (A) and surface carbon content (B) of the active material satisfies 7 < B/A < 11.5. The ratio (D/C) between the specific surface area (C) and lubrication quantity (D) of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone of the active material satisfies 1.5 < D/C ≤ 2.
