Abstract:

A welding method for the outer joint member (11) of a constant velocity universal joint (10), the outer joint member (11) being configured so that a cup section (12) and a shaft section (13) are configured from two or more separate members, the cup section (12) having track grooves (30) which are formed in the inner periphery of the cup section (12) and with which torque transmission elements (19) engage, the shaft section (13) being formed at the bottom of the cup section (12), the outer joint member (11) being also configured so that a cup member (12a) which forms the cup section (12) and a shaft member (13b) which forms the shaft section (13) are joined together. The welding method is characterized in that the cup member (12a) and the shaft member (13b) have shapes which, when ends (72, 73, 74, 75) thereof are abutted against each other, form a closed hollow cavity (47), and in that the abutted ends (72, 73, 74, 75) of the cup member (12a) and the shaft member (13b) are melted and welded together in a state in which the pressure within the hollow cavity (47) is equal to or less than the atmospheric pressure.
