Abstract:
This tripod-type constant speed universal joint (1) comprises: an outside joint member (2) provided with a track groove (5); a tripod member (3) provided with three leg shafts (7) which project in a radial direction; a roller (11) that is inserted into the track groove (5); and an inner ring (12) externally fitted to the leg shafts (7) and rotatably supporting the roller (11). On the surface of each of the leg shafts (7), a hardened layer (16) is formed by means of carburization, quenching, and tempering. The tripod member (3) is formed using a steel material having a carbon content of 0.23% to 0.44%. A Ts torque is set to be 0.3 times the minimum static torsional torque required for a shaft (9) that is coupled to the tripod member (3) to twist and break, and the effective hardened-layer depth (H) of the hardened layer (16) having a hardness limit of 600HV is made to be equal to or greater than the maximum shearing stress depth (Z) occurring at the time that the Ts torque is loaded.
