The present invention enables, by a simple configuration, easy adjustment of braking torque generated by rotation. A rotary damper (1) restricts movement of a viscous fluid with which a cylindrical chamber (111) is filled, thereby generating braking torque with respect to an applied rotational force. A cap (15) is a screw-on type with respect to a case (11) and, in accordance with an amount of screwing of the cap (15) onto the case (11), a gap G1 between the cap (15) and a partitioning part (115) is adjusted and an amount of movement of the viscous fluid that moves through the gap G1 is adjusted, thereby enabling adjustment of the braking torque generated by the rotation. Additionally, an axial force generation member (17) that is formed from a plastically deformable or elastically deformable member and that imparts a counterforce to the cap (15) is formed between the cap (15) and the partitioning part (115) and, due to this, axial force is generated with respect to the screwing of the cap (15) onto the case (11), leaking of the viscous fluid from a threaded portion between the cap (15) and the case (11) can be prevented, and an adjustment margin of the gap G1 can be increased.
