Abstract:

Optically active cyclopentanecarboxylic acid derivatives (such as cystacyclin or sarkomycin) exhibiting the activity of inducing the differentiation of nerve cells can be produced through fermentation in a high yield by cultivating a cystacyclin- or sarkomycin-producing bacterium on a nutrient medium containing a mercato compound of the general formula (I) to produce a cyclopentanecarboxylic acid derivative of general formula (II) having a side chain corresponding to the mercapto compound, and isolating the cyclopentanecarboxylic acid derivative thus produced from the culture medium. HS-Y (I), (wherein Y is an optionally substituted C�1?-C�20? hydrocarbon residue having a molecular weight of 15 to 400 as the whole of the residue, provided that when the residue is cyclic, one or two heteroatoms may be contained in the cycle).
