Abstract:
Provided is a dimpled piston ring in which the necessary oil film thickness at an outer peripheral surface is maintained and increases in a friction coefficient are minimized even in the vicinity of the top dead center and the bottom dead center of the piston. The piston ring (10) comprises a piston ring body (11) having an outer peripheral surface (12) with a barrel-faced shape and a plurality of dimples (13) that are formed on the outer peripheral surface (12) of the piston ring body (11). The area ratio of the dimples (13) that are outside an initial period sliding contact range (14) within which said dimples come into sliding contact with the slide surface (20) of the piston ring (10) during an initial use start period is smaller than the area ratio of the dimples (13) that are within the initial period sliding contact range.
