Abstract:
A piston ring manufacturing method according to the present disclosure includes (A) a step of cleaning the surface of a base material of the piston ring, and (B) a step of forming a coating containing Si and N by vapor deposition in a chamber, in such a way as to cover at least a portion of the base material surface, wherein, in step (B), in order for a coating satisfying the following conditions to be formed, the pressure inside the chamber is set within a range of 2 to 6 Pa, and the bias voltage is set within a range of -5 to -18V. ∙ The amount of Si lies with a range of 1.1 to 7.5 at%. ∙ The crystallite size lies in a range of 10 to 30 nm. ∙ Compressive residual stress lies in a range of 400 to 800 MPa.
