Abstract:
The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition and health functional food for the prevention or treatment of osteoarthritis, containing a Porphyra yezoensis extract or a Gloiopeltis furcata extract. The composition of the present invention is non-toxic to chondrocytes and has anti-inflammatory effects. The composition of the present invention inhibits the expression of cartilage matrix-degrading enzymes (ADAMTS-4,5 and MMP-1,3,13) and promotes the expression of components of the cartilage matrix (collagen type II or Aggrecan) that are degraded due to inflammation, and thus has an excellent chondroprotective effect.
