Provided are a medium conveyance device, a control method, and a control program by which printing on a medium can be favorably controlled while suppressing increases in device costs. The medium conveyance device comprises: a conveyance unit that conveys a medium; a printing unit that prints on the conveyed medium and is provided so as to be moveable in a direction orthogonal to the medium conveyance direction; a detection unit that detects the installation position of the printing unit in a direction orthogonal to the medium conveyance direction; an imaging unit that images the conveyed medium and generates an input image; a determination unit that compares the installation position with the medium position detected from the input image and determines whether printing by the printing unit can be carried out on the medium; and a control unit that executes an abnormality process if it is determined by the determination unit that printing cannot be carried out on the medium.
