Abstract:
In the present invention, the correct number of incident photons can be deduced (estimated) even if there is a temporal change in the incident illuminance during an exposure period. Provided is an imaging element comprising: a light-receiving element that is provided to each pixel, and that detects the presence of a photon; and a detection circuit that is provided corresponding to the light-receiving element, and that detects a photon which is incident into the light-receiving element. In this imaging element, the detection circuit comprises: a photon detection unit that performs, on the light-receiving element, detection of a photon incident into the light-receiving element by recharge control in a plurality of periods; a plurality of retention units; and a selection control unit that selects one of the plurality of retention units as a retention unit for retaining a photon detection number detected by the photon detection unit.
