This image generation device comprises: a first frame buffer (231) which stores image signals respectively corresponding to scanning lines for constituting a frame image by the first number of scanning lines; a second frame buffer (232) which stores image signals respectively corresponding to scanning lines for constituting a frame image by the second number of scanning lines that is smaller than the first number of scanning lines; and a control unit (201). The control unit (201) controls a scanning unit so that an image is generated by applying image signals from the first frame buffer (231) to a first image area of the prescribed number of scanning lines including a viewpoint position on the frame image corresponding to the gaze, and controls the scanning unit so that an image is generated by applying image signals from the second frame buffer (232) to a second image area other than the first image area of the frame image.
