Abstract:
With a purpose of displaying high-quality images, provided is an image display device (100) comprising, between a light modulating element (132R, 132G, or 132B) for emitting image light and a projecting unit (140) for projecting an image, a polarizer (134R, 134G, or 134B), a polarization converting element (136), and a quarter wave plate (137) in this order. The polarizer (134R, 134G, or 134B) transmits linearly polarized light having a predetermined polarization direction. The polarization converting element (136) converts a polarization state of the linearly polarized light transmitted through the polarizer (134R, 134G, or 134B) and emits the resultant light as unpolarized light. The quarter wave plate (137) is disposed on an optical path of the unpolarized light emitted from the polarization converting element (136).
