Abstract:
Provided is a heater element 100 comprising: a honeycomb structure 10 having an outer peripheral wall 11 and a partition wall 12 that is disposed inside the outer peripheral wall 11 and that defines and forms a plurality of cells 14 forming a flow passage from a first end surface 13a to a second end surface 13b, the outer peripheral wall 11 and the partition wall 12 being configured from a material having PTC characteristics; and a pair of electrode layers 20 disposed on the surface of the outer peripheral wall 11. The honeycomb structure 10 has a shape having a long axis X2 and a short axis X3 in a cross-section orthogonal to a central axis X1. The pair of electrode layers 20 are formed in band shapes extending parallel to the central axis X1. In the cross-section orthogonal to the central axis X1, the pair of electrode layers 20 are disposed on the surface of the outer peripheral wall 11 so as to face each other across the long axis X2, which passes through the center of gravity of the honeycomb structure 10. The heater element 100 furthermore comprises plate-form external connection members 30 that are disposed on the end-section sides of the electrode layers 20 and that are in planar contact with the electrode layers 20..
