Abstract:
This foil bearing comprises a housing, a top foil having a bearing surface facing a rotating body, and a bump foil arranged between the top foil and the housing. The bump foil is configured to elastically support the top foil by stretching in the direction of rotation. When the load received by the bearing surface from the rotating body is equal to or less than a threshold value, the bump foil has a gap with the housing and has a gap with the top foil to support the top foil. When the load received by the bearing surface from the rotating body exceeds the threshold value, the top foil and the bump foil locally serve as a plain bearing to support the rotating body.
