[Problem] To form a low-cost and lightweight filtering material cleaning device that cleans a filtering material disposed in a filtration tank or the like, through rubbing by means of a revolving screw provided therein. [Solution] A filtering material cleaning device (200) is for use in a filtering apparatus (100) which has a layer of filtering material (110) disposed inside a filtration tank or the like and in which filtration takes place by passing raw water supplied thereto through the layer of the filtering material (110). The filtering material cleaning device comprises: a spiral screw (204) that is so arranged as to stand erect in the layer of the filtering material (110); and a screw driving means (206, 208) that rotates said screw (204) about a screw shaft. The filtering material cleaning device (200) causes the screw (204) to rotate to clean the filtering material (110) through rubbing. Since an outer cylinder enclosing the screw (204) is not provided, the filtering material (110) is transferred upward while maintaining direct contact between the outer circumferential edge of the screw (204) which has a plurality of screw blades and the layer of the filtering material (110).
