Abstract:
 Provided is a failure detection sensor which, when attached to structural members of various structures such as buildings, is capable of easily detecting the risk of the failure of the structural member, and thus the structure, before such failure occurs. The failure detection sensor has a simple structure, and can be produced inexpensively. The failure detection sensor comprises a first member (10) and a second member (20), one end of which is affixed to or retained by the first member (10) and the other end of which is not affixed or retained by the first member (10) and is provided in parallel with the first member (10), said second member (20) having and fracturing characteristics such that the second member (20) fractures during the elastic deformation or plastic deformation of the first member (10). The failure detection sensor also has a compression coil spring (40) that applies tensile force to the other end of the second member (20) in the direction towards the opposite side from the one end. The first member (10) and the second member (20) are rods having a rounded or polygonal profile, and the first member (10) is a hollow rod. The second member (20) has a notch (24) that serves as a stress concentration site between the one end and the other end. The second member (20) is formed from a brittle material.
