Title:
ENRICHMENT OF CARBON THIRTEEN
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1990/011818
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A method of enriching 13C which comprises exposing a gaseous mixture of a halogenomethane containing at least one fluorine atom and a natural abundance of 13C with an oxygen-containing oxidizing agent to a carbon dioxide laser to cause selective dissociation and reaction of a halogenomethane-C13 to thereby form CF2O containing enriched 13C, hydrolyzing the formed CF2O to form CO2, and recovering CO2 containing enriched 13C. This method serves to improve the efficiency of photochemical reaction from an aspect of the laser energy and reduce the production cost of 13C compounds. Since the final product of enrichment is in the form of CO2, it can easily be stored and various labelled compounds can readily be produced therefrom. In addition, it is possible to enrich 13C further more highly by the combination of this method with other methods of 13C enrichment, particularly cryogenic distillation of CO.
