A braking device provided by the present invention is used for braking a belt conveyor driven by a machine head. A belt of a belt conveyor comprises a first belt surface and a second belt surface which are oppositely arranged. The braking device comprises a first clamping plate and a second clamping plate, the first clamping plate being arranged on one side of the first belt surface of the belt, and the second clamping plate being arranged on one side of the second belt surface of the belt. The first clamping plate and the second clamping plate move in a direction that the first clamping plate and the second clamping plate are close to each other, such that the second clamping plate abuts against the second belt surface, and the first clamping plate abuts against the first belt surface. Hence, the first clamping plate and the second clamping plate clamp the belt so as to brake the belt. The first clamping plate and the second clamping plate also move in a direction that the first clamping plate and the second clamping plate are away from each other, such that the first clamping plate and the second clamping plate release the belt. In the present invention, the belt can be directly clamped in a double-sided clamping mode by means of the first clamping plate and the second clamping plate, so that double-sided braking of the belt is realized. Therefore, the present application brakes the belt reliably, and overspeed and overlap accidents are avoided.
