Provided is a braking device capable of generating greater braking force. The present invention provides a braking device provided with: a housing (10) having a peripheral wall (11); a coil holding section (20) provided within the housing (10); a coil (30) held by the coil holding section (20); a first operation chamber (40) formed between the inner peripheral surface of the peripheral wall (11) of the housing (10) and the outer peripheral surface of the coil holding section (20), the outer peripheral surface being parallel to the inner peripheral surface; a rotor (60) provided within the first operation chamber (40); and a magneto-viscous fluid (80) filled into the first operation chamber (40). The inner peripheral surface of the peripheral wall (11) of the housing (10) is located within the housing (10) at a position farthest in the radial direction from the center of rotation of the rotor (60). The rotor (60) is formed in a cylindrical shape having an outer peripheral surface which has a gap relative to the inner peripheral surface of the peripheral wall (11) of the housing (10), and also having an inner peripheral surface which has a gap relative to the outer peripheral surface of the coil holding section (20). The shear stress of the magneto-viscous fluid (80) acts on the outer peripheral surface and inner peripheral surface of the rotor (60).
