A boot for a universal joint, comprising: a mounting section which is located at an end of a bellows-shaped membrane section and is to be mounted to a shaft or an outer joint member; and a band mounting groove which is located in the outer periphery of the mounting section, wherein the mounting section has enhanced sealing properties to obtain high sealing performance. Lips are provided on the inner peripheral surface of the mounting section, and ridges are provided on the bottom surface of the band mounting groove at positions corresponding to the lips. The lips each have an inequilateral cross-sectional shape which satisfies the relationships of L1 < L2 and θ1 <θ2, where L1 is the length of a side of the shape of the lip, said side being a sloped surface located on the inner side of the boot, θ1 is the slope angle (the slope angle relative to a plane normal to the axis) on the inner side of the boot, L2 is the length of a side of the shape of the lip, said side being a sloped surface located on the outer side of the boot, and θ2 is the slope angle (the slope angle relative to a plane normal to the axis) on the outer side of the boot. A groove is provided between the lips.
