Title:
ALUMINUM PISTON FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1997/031202
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
An aluminum piston for an internal combustion engine comprises a cylindrical-shaped piston skirt portion in slide contact with a cylinder wall of an internal combustion engine, a cylindrical-shaped intermediate portion extending from the piston skirt portion and formed with top ring grooves, and a piston top surface extending from the intermediate portion to define a combustion chamber, wherein surface portions of the top ring grooves or surface portions of the piston top surface or both being composed of a nitriding layer. Preferably, the nitriding layer forming the surface portions of the top ring grooves or the piston top surface has a hardness of Hv 300 or more and a depth of 20 'mu'm. Also, it is preferable to form a nitriding layer on surface portions of the piston skirt portion. The aluminum piston is excellent in abrasion resistance and heat resistance. Accordingly, the aluminum piston can be used for internal combustion engines such as engines and diesel engines which rotate at high speeds.
