PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary-wing airplane capable of applying a rotary torque to a main power transmission mechanism between a free turbine and a main rotor.SOLUTION: A rotary-wing airplane 1 comprises: a gas generator 10 generating combustion gas; a free turbine 20 driven by the combustion gas from the gas generator 10; a main rotor 30; a main power transmission mechanism 40 mechanically connecting the free turbine 20 to the main rotor 30; a first electrical machine 50 selectively functioning as an electric motor or a generator; a first power transmission mechanism 53 mechanically connecting the main power transmission mechanism 40 to the first electric machine 50; and a control unit 70 controlling the first electrical machine 50 to operate.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
