Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prevent the lowering of the activity of a metallic copper catalyst in the production of methacrylamide useful as a raw material for polymers having various applications by the catalytic hydration reaction of methacrylonitrile and to prolong the catalytic life.
CONSTITUTION: Methacrylamide useful as a raw material for a polymer having various applications such as flocculent, paper-strengthening agent, textile modifier, polymer modifier and thickener is produced by reacting methacrylonitrile with water in liquid phase in the presence of a metallic copper catalyst. In the above process, the acidic substances such as acetic acid, hydrogen cyanide, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid and propionic acid existing in the raw material are removed to ≤100ppm, preferably ≤50ppm by fractional distillation or anion exchange resin treatment. The degradation of catalyst can be prevented in high efficiency.
