PURPOSE: To produce a metal contg. U by reacting U chloride with Na vapor to produce U metal and NaCl, liquefying the reaction product by cooling and separating both gravitationally.
CONSTITUTION: A liq. U chloride (UCl4, etc.) is supplied to a cylindrical mild- steel vessel 12 from its central inlet 16, molten Na is supplied from a side inlet 18, heated by a heater 20 and vaporized, and both materials are brought into contact with and reacted with each other. The reaction product consisting of U metal and NaCl is cooled to a temp. lower than their vaporization temps., and the liq. reaction product is dropped into a weir assembly 22. The relatively light NaCl in the dropped reaction product is discharged from an upper overflow 24, and the relatively heavy liq. U is discharged from a lower overflow 26. A metal contg. U is produced in this way.
