PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing fine metal oxide powders by which the operation of a burner can be continuously carried out for a long time without causing nozzle blocking trouble.

CONSTITUTION: A burner having a multi-ply tubed structure consisting of three or more tubes is used. A gaseous metal chloride such as gaseous TiCl4 as starting material is fed to the central inner tube N-1, an inert gas is fed to a tube N-2 at the outside of the tube N-1 and a gaseous oxidizing agent is fed to the outermost tube N-4. The metal chloride is burned and oxidized to produce the objective fine metal oxide powder such as TiO2 powder.
