To provide a method for producing the subject compound in high yield while low in producing byproducts by reacting a formylvalerate ester with ammonia under non-hydrogenating conditions and then hydrogenating the resultant product in the presence of ammonia.
This method comprises: reacting 5-formylvalerate ester [pref. a compound of the formula (R is methyl or ethyl)] with ammonia under non- hydrogenating conditions pref. at reaction temperature of 0 to 100°C for a contact or a retention time of 5 sec. to 2 min.; and converting the resultant product to the objective product under hydrogenating conditions generally in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenating catalyst and in the presence of ammonia pref. at reaction temperature of 80 to 160°C for a contact or a retention time of 30 sec. to 2 hr. under the pressure of 0.5 to 20 MPa. The above 2 steps are each pref. conducted in the presence of an additional solvent e.g. methyl- tertiary butyl ether. The hydrogenating catalyst is pref. exemplified by Raney nickel.
