Abstract:
To provide a method for producing highly pure lithium carbonate using alternative brine sources such as geothermal, oilfield and relict hydrothermal brines, which have been difficult to exploit conventionally.SOLUTION: The method includes reacting a raw material aqueous solution that includes Li2CO3 with CO2 to form a reaction aqueous solution comprising dissolved LiHCO3. Unreacted CO2 and insoluble compounds are separated from the reaction aqueous solution. Dissolved impurities are removed from the reaction aqueous solution by contacting the reaction aqueous solution with an ion selective medium to produce a final aqueous solution. The highly pure Li2CO3 is precipitated from the final aqueous solution to be recovered, in which the precipitated Li2CO3 has a purity of at least about 99.99%.SELECTED DRAWING: None
