To automatically read out the sort of a film from a film carrier by reading out picture data in an area other than the picture area of a developed film based on a prescribed data reading condition and discriminating the sort of the film based on the luminance data of the picture data.
After setting a carrier on an initial position, a CPU 1 sets up communication with the carrier, and when the communication is possible, judges the carrier as a carrier 3. When the communication is impossible, the CPU 1 reads out the picture data of a frame area on a film. The read data are sent from a data communication part 4 to a CPU 20 through a data communication part 21 in a personal computer part 60 and stored in a memory 20a built in the CPU 20. The CPU 20 checks whether a lib exists between frames or not based on the stored data to discriminates carriers 1, 2. Then the CPU 20 finds out a density difference (difference data) between the maximum value and minimum value of the luminance data, compares the density difference with a threshold and discriminates the sort of the film in accordance with compared result between the difference value and the threshold.
