Abstract:
To provide a method in which a sugar raw material containing sugars up to trisaccharide by a predetermined amount or more is subjected to hydrogenation treatment to yield a sugar alcohol with high yield.SOLUTION: Provided is a method for producing sugar alcohol, including subjecting a sugar aqueous solution containing a sugar raw material derived from plant biomass and whose 20 mass% or more of the sugars constituting the sugar raw material are up to trisaccharide, and the sugar aqueous solution having a pH of 3 to 5, to hydrogenation treatment in the presence of a metal catalyst containing at least one of Raney nickel and Raney cobalt.SELECTED DRAWING: None
