Abstract:
A fluid reaction mixt. is agitated in a vessel equipped with two eccentrically placed agitators mounted on vertical shafts of different lengths. The agitators induce an axial motion in the mixt. Each shaft is placed diametrically opposite the other and rotates in the opposed direction. One of the agitators is positioned low down on one side of the vessel whilst the other is positioned higher on the other side. The design of each agitator and its speed of rotation is such that each agitator conveys the same quantity of fluid in the axial direction as the other and that a free turbulent zone is created along the interface between the upward and downward streams of reaction fluids. The method is partic. applicable to polymerisation processes. The required circulation and agitation can be calculated in advance and the product remains within a narrow distribution with virtually no dead zones.
