Abstract:

To provide a method for improving a nickel catalyst used when a fatty acid amide derivative useful, for example, as a surfactant for washing is manufactured by reacting an N-alkylamine with a reducing sugar and hydrogen in the presence of the nickel catalyst.

In the method for improving the nickel catalyst used in hydrogenation reaction, the catalyst contains a tramp material selected from the group consisting of nickel oxide, an organic substance, an excessive amount of caustic alkali, alumina fine powder and a mixture of them. This improving method includes a stage selected from the group consisting of a stage (1) for washing the catalyst with at least one kind of a solvent to remove a soluble contaminant, a stage (2) for reducing nickel oxide to nickel and a stage (3) mixing the tramp material with them.
