Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an all-optical half adder by an XOR logic element and an AND logic element by using an element with semiconductor optical amplifiers as a base.
SOLUTION: A pump signal and an irradiation signal are made incident together on the two semiconductor optical amplifiers, and the output signal of inverter characteristic caused by gain saturation and wavelength conversion of the semiconductor optical amplifiers is added to output the SUM (sum) signal of the half adder. Simultaneously, by making the pump signal incident on an XPM wavelength variable device with the irradiation signal having high power while varying the pump signal, the power of the output signal is increased. By making the pump signal incident on the XPM wavelength variable device with the irradiation signal having low power while varying the pump signal, the CARRY (carry) signal of the half-adder is outputted. Thus the total light half adder using the semiconductor optical amplifier is realized.
