This hydraulic transmission system 22 for a vehicle 10 includes a main pump 24 for supplying a fluid to at least one of the hydraulic motors 26A and 26B for driving a vehicle mover members 14A and 14B, an auxiliary pump, and a "bypass" connection 64 between a supply orifice of the auxiliary pump and an unpressurized tank 52. A first compression means 58 arranged on the bypass connection maintains a pump protection pressure in a pump protection portion of the bypass connection. This pressure is applied to the main orifice of the main pump to reliably protect the pump when the pump is actuated but stops supply.
