Abstract:
Hydrogenation catalyst of Raney nickel or cobalt, nickel-on-carrier or cobalt-on-carrier type is modified by treating with carbon mon- or di-oxide, formaldehyde, lower aliphatic aldehyde, aromatic aldehyde, aliphatic and/or aromatic ketone, glyoxal, pyruvaldehyde or glyoxylic acid in a liquid dispersion medium consisting of water or organic solvent at 0-120 degrees C for 15 minutes to 24 hours. An Independent claim is also included for a method of catalytic hydrogenation of a nitrile to the corresponding primary amine by contacting the nitrile with the modified hydrogenation catalyst.
