To provide an elevator which includes a hoist having dimensions smaller in a direction along a drive shaft than when including a disk brake in a unit.
The elevator 1 is driven by the hoist 4 while an elevator car 2 and a balance weight 3 are hung like a well bucket in a hoistway 5 by a main rope 6. The hoist 4 of the elevator 1 includes a main sheave 41 over which the main rope 6 is looped, the drive shaft 42 which is connected to the main sheave 41, a bearing 43 for supporting the drive shaft 42, a housing 44 into which the bearing 43 is incorporated, and the disk brake 71 (72) in which a disk 712 (722) is arranged perpendicularly to the drive shaft 42 and which releases a braking force generated by a spring 715 (725) by an electromagnetic force. The disk brake 71 (72) includes a coil 711 (721) which is incorporated into the housing 44 on the outer periphery of the bearing 43 to generate the electromagnetic force.
