PURPOSE: To prevent a rope from slipping on a drive sheave in an emergency stop.
CONSTITUTION: A brake device 17 is installed on a hoist 3 which is provided with a drive sheave 4 on which a rope 6 from one end of which a car is suspended and from the other end of which a balance weight 8 is suspended is wound. It comprises a braking force energizing means 20 to energize a braking force applied to a brake drum 29 of the hoist 3, a braking force release means 19 to release a braking force applied to a brake drum 29 by the braking force energizing means 20, and a braking force control means 26 to control the braking force release means 19. When the speed of the car during emergency braking is over a specified limit or the deceleration is less than a specified limit, the braking force control means 26 gives full braking force first, and when it reaches a specified value, a weaker braking force than the full braking force is given.
