Title:
ELECTRON GUN FOR EMITTING ELECTRON BEAMS MODULATED BY OPTICAL DEVICE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH02260352
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE: To correct defects of an electron gun caused by its employment of laser pulses to excite its cathode and thus resolve its constraints in performance by substituting a light modulator interposed between its light source and photocathode for the laser. CONSTITUTION: An electron gun comprises a photocathode 1 and a light source 11 of incoherent light for emitting light beams 2 modulated by a light modulator. The light modulator is typically an active polarizing modulation element 15 arranged between a polarizer 13 and a filter 14. Emitted light beams are focused on the photocathode by means of an optical, means 19 typically comprising a lens. The lasertron employing the light source of incoherent light modulated by the light modulator thus has a far higher frequency because of the light modulation, the photoelectric efficiency of the system is improved depending on the type of a light source selected, and the system may be used as an RF amplifier because light modulation is obtained from RF signals, among other various advantages.
