A driving unit of an automobile is constituted by arranging a retarder 2 having a rotor impeller 2.1 and a stator impeller 2.2 on the left side of a crank housing 1.3 and an air blower 3. A housing of the retarder 2 is constituted of a bell shaped part 2.3 to surround the rotor impeller 2.1 and a covering member 2.4, and the covering member 2.4 forms a part of the retarder housing by surrounding the stator impeller 2.2. Additionally, this covering member 2.4 is formed so as to have three connecting pipe pieces for a cooling medium and a working medium, that is, two inlets and one outlet. Cooling water of a vehicle radiator is introduced to the connecting pipe 2.8 formed on a rear wall of the stator impeller 2.1 of the three connecting pipe pieces, and it flows out from the other connecting part piece 2.9 after heat exchange.
