To compact a drive unit of the type having a coolant circuit in which a coolant serves also as a working fluid of a retarder by providing a pump impeller wheel for feeding the coolant, and disposing the pump impeller wheel coaxially with respect to the rotor impeller wheel of the retarder.
This drive unit 1 comprises an engine 2, a retarder 4 and the like, the retarder 4 being rotated by the engine 2 via a reduction gear 5. A coolant circuit 6 provided with a cooling device 8 having a ventilating device 3 is connected to the retarder 4 and the engine 2. A condit line 9 of the coolant circuit 6 extends from the outlet 10 of the cooling device 8 to the fluid inlet 11 of the retarder 4 and a conduit 12 extends from the fluid outlet 13 of the retarder 4 to the inlet 14 of the cooling device 8 via the engine 2. The retarder 4 comprises a rotor impeller wheel and a stator impeller wheel and rotation of the rotor impeller wheel causes rotation of a pump impeller wheel provided coaxially therewith to discharge a coolant.
