Title:
DIFFERENTIAL TYPE POWER DEVICE FOR MULTIPLE SPOOL TYPE TURBINE ENGINE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS63159627
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
In order to produce a power output at a substantially constant speed, a multi-spool turbine engine is provided, with means for generating power related to a rotational speed difference between the spools. In one version (Fig. 3) spools 18,20 of a multi-spool turbofan engine are connected to two inputs of a differential gear 26. The differential gear's output is connected to drive an alternator 50. In another version (Fig. 7), an alternator's coils (64) are carried on one spool (18) and magnets (62) are carried on another spool (20). An electrical output created by a rotational speed difference between the coils and magnets is taken through a slip ring (68) or by a rotating transformer (Fig. 8). In both versions the alternator rotates at at substantially constant speed to yield a relatively constant frequency output, requiring no transmission/clutch devices, or frequency compensating circuits. The alternator can be replaced with a d.c. generator which can be small because of the generator's constant operating speed. A control system (Fig. 9) may be provided which compares a signal representative of alternator frequency with desired valves stored in a memory 92 a signal from comparator 90 being passed to controller 96 to vary the position of stator vanes 98 in the engine.
