Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5512041
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
1365597 Polymerisation apparatus; mixing apparatus MONSANTO CO 15 Aug 1972 [16 Aug 1971 (4)] 38036/72 Headings B1C and B1X Apparatus for continuous exothermic polymerisation comprises housing 21 defining horizontal chamber 22, at least one inlet port 33 and at least one outlet port 11 for the chamber, a paddle assembly comprising axial shaft 67, at least one pair of opposed radially outwardly extending blade members 83, 84, at least one blade member having a "discontinuity" 85, 86 therein and journal means including seals 74, 75 mounting shaft 67 for rotation, drive means for rotating the shaft, a reflux condenser 18 comprising a tube opening into the upper part of the chamber and means for cooling the exterior surface portions of the tube, and control elements for regulating the flow of material from the chamber to the condenser. The control elements may comprise means for sensing the temperature and/or pressure in the chamber and control means operating valve means regulating the flow of vapour in response to signals from the temperature and/or pressure sensing means. The "valve means" may be in the condenser cooling water circuit (Figs. 1, 2, 4 not shown) or may control the feed-in of inert gas to and venting of reaction vapours from a condensate receiver (42) downstream of the reactor (Fig. 5 not shown). In use from 10% to 90% of the chamber is filled with polymerisable material. The paddle assembly may comprise one or more pairs of blade members. The discontinuities may take the form of interior slots, as shown, or extending to the blade edges as in Figs. 13c, 13f, 13g, 131, 13i, 14, or alternatively each blade may extend along only one half the axis of the chamber, another similarly "discontinuous" set of blades extending along the other half of the axis (Figs. 13a, to 13e). In the embodiment of Figs. 13g, 13h the blades are supported by axially extending rib members and in this embodiment at least knife blades (159) are adjustably mounted at the outer edges of the blades.
