Abstract:

Provided is a surface-emitting laser capable of achieving stabilization of a horizontal mode while suppressing a decline in productivity.　A surface-emitting laser according to the present technology comprises: a first structure including a substrate; and a second substrate provided atop the first structure. The second structure includes a first reflector, a second reflector, an active layer disposed between the first and second reflectors, and an optical confinement layer disposed between the active layer and a surface of the second reflector on the side opposite to the active layer side. The optical confinement layer has a high refractive index region, and a low refractive index region that surrounds the high refractive index region. The second structure and the high refractive index region each have, in a planar view, a lengthwise direction and a width direction. A first ratio, which is the ratio of the length of the high refractive index region in the lengthwise direction to the length thereof in the width direction, and a second ratio, which is the ratio of the length of the second structure in the lengthwise direction to the length thereof in the width direction are both greater than 1.00 and less than 2.00. The first ratio is greater than the second ratio.
