Abstract:
Present invention provide a multipurpose chair, comprising: a) a seat portion (1) rested on legs (3) and a back rest portion (2) extending upwardly away from the seat portion; b) a movable work surface assembly (4) having a solid sheet (4'), and "L" shaped clamp (4'') for rotationally attaching it to said seat portion (1); and c) locking means to lock said solid sheet (4') parallel to seat portion (1) and back rest portion (2), wherein one end of the "L" shaped clamp (4'') is attached to the solid sheet (4') and another end of the "L" shaped clamp is rotationally attached to the seat portion (1) to allow the circular movement of the solid sheet around the seat portion; and the locking means assist to lock said solid sheet parallel to seat portion (1) and said back rest portion (2).

Claims:

1. A chair, comprising:

a) a seat portion (1 ) rested on legs (3) and a back rest portion (2) extending upwardly away from the seat portion;

b) a movable work surface assembly (4) having a solid sheet (4’), and“L” shaped clamp (4”) for rotationally attaching it to said seat portion (1 ); and

c) locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to seat portion (1 ) and back rest portion (2),

wherein one end of the“L” shaped clamp (4”) is attached to the solid sheet (4’) and another end of the“L” shaped clamp is rotationally attached to the seat portion (1 ) to allow the circular movement of the solid sheet around the seat portion; and the locking means assist to lock said solid sheet parallel to seat portion (1 ) and said back rest portion (2).

2. A chair, comprising:

a) a seat portion (1 ) rested on legs (3) and a back rest portion (2) extending upwardly away from the seat portion;

b) a movable work surface assembly (4) having a solid sheet (4’), and two“L” shaped clamps (4”) for rotationally attaching it to said seat portion (1 ); and

c) locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to seat portion (1 ) and back rest portion (2),

wherein first ends of said“L” shaped clamps (4”) are attached to the solid sheet (4’) and second ends of said“L” shaped clamps are rotationally attached to the seat portion (1 ) to allow the circular movement of the solid sheet around the seat portion; and the locking means assist to lock said solid sheet parallel to seat portion (1 ) and said back rest portion (2).

3. The chair as claimed in claims 1 and 2, wherein the seat portion (1 ) is rested on legs (3) being two front legs and two back side legs.

4. The chair as claimed in claims 1 , 2 and 3, wherein the locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to seat portion (1 ) comprises a projection (5) protruding from one or more leg selected from the two front legs and it assists to lock said solid sheet parallel to seat portion

(1 ) by allowing resting of the“L” shaped clamp on it for preventing further rotation in downward direction.

5. The chair as claimed in claims 1 and 2, wherein the back rest portion

(2) extending upwardly away from the seat portion is attached to or protruding from the seat portion (1 ).

The chair as claimed in claims 1 and 2, wherein the locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to back rest portion (2) comprises a projection (6) protruding from back rest portion (2) and it assists to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to back rest portion (2) by allowing it to rest on back rest portion (2) for preventing further rotation in downward direction.

7. The chair as claimed in claims 1 , 2 and 3, wherein the back rest portion (2) extending upwardly away from the seat portion is attached to one or more leg selected from the back side legs (3).

The chair as claimed in claims 1 , 2 and 7, wherein the locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to back rest portion (2) comprises a projection protruding from one or more leg selected from the two back side legs and it assists to lock said solid sheet parallel to seat portion (1 ) by allowing resting of the“L” shaped clamp on it for preventing further rotation in downward direction.

The chair as claimed in claims 1 , 2 and 7, wherein the locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to back rest portion (2) comprises a hook (8) attached to solid sheet (4’) and it assists to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to back rest portion (2) by locking with back rest portion (2) for preventing further rotation of solid sheet (4’) in downward direction.

10. The chair as claimed in claims 1 and 2, wherein the solid sheet (4’) has flat or engraved surfaces.

1 1 . The chair as claimed in claim 10, wherein the solid sheet (4’) has at least one flat surface to provide a planar surface for writing, reading, drawing, playing and eating purpose.

12. The chair as claimed in claim 10, wherein the solid sheet (4’) has at least one engraved surface for holding the objects.

13. The chair as claimed in claims 1 and 2, wherein the“L” shaped clamp (4”) comprises a hand rest attached to it.

14. The chair as claimed in claims 1 and 2, wherein second end of the “L” shaped clamp is rotationally attached to the seat portion (1 ) using a ball socket arrangement or a pin-hole arrangement.

15. The chair as claimed in claims 2, wherein first end of one of the said “L” shaped clamps (4”) is attached to the solid sheet (4’) in rotational manner and first end of another“L” shaped clamps (4”) is attached to the solid sheet (4’) in removable manner.

16. The chair as claimed in claims 15, wherein first end of one of the said “L” shaped clamps (4”) is attached to the solid sheet (4’) in rotational manner using a ball socket arrangement or a pin-hole arrangement.

17. The chair as claimed in claims 15, wherein first end of another“L” shaped clamps (4”) is attached to the solid sheet (4’) in removable manner using the lock (7).

Description:
TITLE: A MULTIPURPOSE CHAIR

FIELD OF THE INVENTION:

The present invention relates to a sitting and working furniture. More particularly it relates to a multipurpose chair.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:

Right from studying, eating, drawing, gaming etc. and many other works require a sitting and working surface. The chair is commonly used for furniture for sitting. The table is another furniture usually used for working purpose. The pair make a sitting and working assembly together. The space consumption and comfort is many concern for many of the designs of chairs and tables. Till date many types of designs have been proposed to make them more attractive and comfortable. In fact there have been attempts to make the assembly compact and single unit.

Chairs and tables have been used since antiquity. There have been many utility patents and design protections filed for various arrangements and shapes of chairs with working pad assembly. US564044A, US1023620A, NL1014334C2 disclosed chairs having working pad attached to the base or legs, whereas USD261578S, US6669282B2,

JP2010046397A disclosed the chairs with working pad attached to side arm. However, all these assemblies suffer from inconvenience caused due to hanging of working pad when it is not required. The mechanisms were also complex and involved high maintenance cost.

There still remains a need to provide more simple and comfortable system which can also provide ease in operation. The current invention satisfy these needs by providing a chair which can be used for sitting as well as working purpose. The working surface doesn’t cause inconvenience as it can be accommodate as an integral part of chair when not in use. It is simple in construction and operation.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:

In first aspect the invention provides a chair, comprising:

a) a seat portion (1 ) rested on legs (3) and a back rest portion (2) extending upwardly away from the seat portion;

b) a movable work surface assembly (4) having a solid sheet (4’), and“L” shaped clamp (4”) for rotationally attaching it to said seat portion (1 ); and

c) locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to seat portion (1 ) and back rest portion (2),

wherein one end of the“L” shaped clamp (4”) is attached to the solid sheet (4’) and another end of the“L” shaped clamp is rotationally attached to the seat portion (1 ) to allow the circular movement of the solid sheet around the seat portion; and the locking means assist to lock said solid sheet parallel to seat portion (1 ) and said back rest portion (2). In second aspect of the invention, above said chair additionally comprises one more“L” shaped clamp, in which first ends of both these“L” shaped clamps (4”) are attached to the solid sheet (4’) and second ends of them are rotationally attached to the seat portion (1 ) to allow the circular movement of the solid sheet around the seat portion.

Preferably, the solid sheet (4’) is locked to the back rest portion (2) in very close proximity either without keeping any gap or with keeping a very minute or trivial gap between them. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS: The embodiments herein will be better understood from the following detailed description with reference to the drawings, in which:

FIGURE 1 illustrates the schematic drawing of the chair according to one of the exemplary embodiment of the current invention employing two“L” shaped clamps attached to the solid sheet (4’) and moving in circular direction towards the front leg portions;

FIGURE 2 illustrates the schematic drawing of the chair according to one of the exemplary embodiment of the current invention employing two “L” shaped clamps rested on projection (5) protruding from the front legs;

FIGURE 3 illustrates the schematic drawing of the chair according to one of the exemplary embodiment of the current invention employing two “L” shaped clamps rested on projection (5) protruding from the front legs and the solid sheet (4’) is lifted by removing the lock attachment at one‘L” shaped clamp; and

FIGURE 4 illustrates the schematic drawing of the chair according to one of the exemplary embodiment of the current invention employing two “L” shaped clamps rotationally attached to the seat portion (1 ) using a pin hole arrangement and having a locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to the back rest portion (2).

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

As mentioned, there remained a long felt need to provide a simple and comfortable system that can also provide ease in operation. The present embodiment tries to address this long felt need.

Referring now to the figures, where similar reference characters denote corresponding features consistently throughout the figures, preferred embodiments are shown.

In first aspect the present invention herein provides a chair comprising

a) a seat portion (1 ) rested on legs (3) and a back rest portion (2) extending upwardly away from the seat portion; b) a movable work surface assembly (4) having a solid sheet (4’), and“L” shaped clamp (4”) for rotationally attaching it to said seat portion (1 ); and

c) locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to seat portion (1 ) and back rest portion (2),

wherein one end of the“L” shaped clamp (4”) is attached to the solid sheet (4’) and another end of the“L” shaped clamp is rotationally attached to the seat portion (1 ) to allow the circular movement of the solid sheet around the seat portion; and the locking means assist to lock said solid sheet parallel to seat portion (1 ) and said back rest portion (2).

This chair can have more than one “L” shaped clamp. More preferably it may have two“L” shaped clamps. Accordingly in second aspect of the invention it provides a chair comprising

a) a seat portion (1 ) rested on legs (3) and a back rest portion (2) extending upwardly away from the seat portion;

b) a movable work surface assembly (4) having a solid sheet (4’), and two“L” shaped clamps (4”) for rotationally attaching it to said seat portion (1 ); and

c) locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to seat portion (1 ) and back rest portion (2),

wherein first ends of said“L” shaped clamps (4”) are attached to the solid sheet (4’) and second ends of said “L” shaped clamps are rotationally attached to the seat portion (1 ) to allow the circular movement of the solid sheet around the seat portion; and the locking means assist to lock said solid sheet parallel to seat portion (1 ) and said back rest portion (2).

Herein after various embodiments are described for the chair having one or two“L” shaped clamps. In one embodiment the seat portion (1 ) is rested on legs (3) being two front legs and two back side legs. The legs could be reduced or increased also. For example, a chair with two front legs and one back side leg can also be suitably prepared in accordance with this invention. The seat portion (1 ) is preferably rectangular. However, any other shape can also be employed suitably.

The back rest portion (2) extending upwardly away from the seat portion can be attached to or protruding from the seat portion (1 ) or it may be attached to one or more leg selected from the back side legs (3).

Variety of locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to seat portion (1 ) can be adopted. For example in one embodiment as shown in Figure 1 , 2 and 3, it comprises a projection (5) protruding from one or more leg selected from the two front legs and it assists to lock said solid sheet parallel to seat portion (1 ) by allowing resting of the“L” shaped clamp on it for preventing further rotation in downward direction.

In another embodiment the locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to back rest portion (2) comprises a projection (6) protruding from back rest portion (2) and it assists to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to back rest portion (2) by allowing it to rest on back rest portion (2) for preventing further rotation in downward direction. In further embodiment, the locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to back rest portion (2) comprises a projection protruding from one or more leg selected from the two back side legs and it assists to lock said solid sheet parallel to seat portion (1 ) by allowing resting of the“L” shaped clamp on it for preventing further rotation in downward direction. In yet another embodiment as shown in Figure 4, the locking means to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to back rest portion (2) comprises a hook (8) attached to solid sheet (4’) and it assists to lock said solid sheet (4’) parallel to back rest portion (2) by locking with back rest portion (2) for preventing further rotation of solid sheet (4’) in downward direction.

Additionally, an axially rotating hook can be attached to the back rest portion (2) to prevent the circular rotation of solid sheet (4’) in upward direction while displacing the chair by user by holding it’s “L” shaped clamp(s). Preferably, the solid sheet (4’) is locked to the back rest portion (2) in very close proximity either without keeping any gap or with keeping a very minute or trivial gap between them.

The solid sheet (4’) may have flat or engraved surfaces. More preferably, in one embodiment it has one flat surface to provide a planar surface for writing, reading, drawing, playing and eating purpose. The board games like snake and ladder, Ludo etc. can also be attached as sticker for playing games on this solid sheet.

In another preferred embodiment, it has one engraved surface for holding the objects. Such engravings may be done by various shaping techniques to produce variety of shapes to hold the objects like water bottle, eraser, pen, pencil etc.

In another beneficial embodiment, the “L” shaped clamp (4”) comprises a hand rest attached to it. The hand rest provide comfort to the user and it may be further cushioned.

The chair according to first and second aspect of the invention, comprises the second end of the“L” shaped clamp rotationally attached to the seat portion (1 ) using a ball socket arrangement or a pin-hole arrangement. This pin-hole attachment is the simplest and cheaper arrangement shown in Figure 4.

According to second aspect, when more than one“L” shaped clamp has been used in the chair, the first end of one of the said“L” shaped clamps (4”) is attached to the solid sheet (4’) in rotational manner and first end of another “L” shaped clamps (4”) is attached to the solid sheet (4’) in removable manner. As shown in Figure 3, the first end of the said“L” shaped clamp (4”) is attached to the solid sheet (4’) in rotational manner using a ball socket arrangement or a pin-hole arrangement and first end of another “L” shaped clamps (4”) is attached to the solid sheet (4’) in removable manner using the lock (7).

The ordinary skilled artisan will appreciate that variety of the material for chair and locking systems can be selected according to the requirements and specifications of the user. Preferably such material include but not limited to metal, plastic, wood or any combination thereof or any other material that can be suitably employed. The chair can be made in various dimensions and“L” shaped clamps can be given slope(s), curvature(s) at their lengths without departing from the spirit of this invention. The back rest portion can be made in variable dimension to provide the smooth surface as well as the protrusion (6) for resting the solid sheet (4’) parallel to it. Any such modifications that may be done without departing from the spirit of this invention are covered under the scope of this invention.

The chair is multipurpose in use. It is simple and comfortable system which can also provide ease in operation. It can be used for sitting as well as working purpose. The working surface doesn’t cause inconvenience as it can be accommodate as an integral part of chair when not in use.

With reference to drawings, the working operation of the chair is explained below:

1 ) Taking the chair in position as shown in Figure 4;

2) Rotating the solid sheet (4’) in circular direction towards the front legs as shown in Figure 2 and resting the“L” shaped clamps on the projection (5) protruding from the front legs as shown in Figure 1 ;

3) Unlocking the solid sheet (4’) at the first end of another“L” shaped clamps (4”) and titling it in upward direction as shown in Figure 3 to sit on the chair;

4) Reattaching the solid sheet (4’) at the first end of another“L” shaped clamps (4”) for using the surface of solid sheet for required purpose like writing, reading, drawing, playing, eating and for holding the objects etc.;

5) Repeating step 3 for getting up from the chair and repeating step 4 followed by rotating the solid sheet (4’) in circular direction towards the back rest portion to bring the chair in position shown in Figure 4. Same operations as shown above are to be followed where only one “L” shaped clamp is used with the change that in step 3) the solid sheet (4’) is tilted in upward direction using ball and socket arrangement used to rotationally attach end of the“L” shaped clamp to the seat portion (1 ).

Example: Construction of chair (100):

The wooden chair as shown in figure 4 was made in following specifications:

Two“L” shaped clamps were rotationally attached at their 24cm length component’s end to the seat portion (1 ) using a pin-hole arrangement. The end at 35cm component of one‘L” shaped clamp was rotationally attached to the solid sheet (4’) using a ball socket arrangement and the end 35cm component of another‘L” shaped clamp was removably attached to the solid sheet (4’) using a pin-hole lock.

The hook (8) was additionally attached to solid sheet (4’) for locking of solid sheet (4’) parallel to back rest portion (2).

Applicant believes that the foregoing description explains the invention fully and particularly and also describes its operation, use and method by which it is to be performed. The embodiments shall not be construed to be limiting the scope of invention. The foregoing description of the specific embodiments will so fully reveal the general nature of the embodiments herein that others can, by applying current knowledge, readily modify and/or adapt for various applications such specific embodiments without departing from the generic concept, and, therefore, such adaptations and modifications should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalents of the disclosed embodiments. It is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation. Therefore, while the embodiments herein have been described in terms of preferred embodiments, those skilled in the art will recognize that the embodiments herein can be practiced with modification within the spirit and scope.
