Provided are a leveling agent for a coating material and a coating material composition containing said leveling agent, from which it is possible to obtain a hard coating that has both excellent curling resistance and extremely high hardness without using a modified resin.　This leveling agent for a coating material is formed of a multibranched copolymer (X) obtained through copolymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a polyfunctional acrylate (A) having three or four (meth)acryloyl groups per molecule, and contains a (meth)acrylic acid alkyl ester (B) as the ethylenically unsaturated monomer. A structural unit derived from the polyfunctional acrylate (A) is included in an amount of 1-8 mass% with respect to the total mass of the multibranched copolymer (X). A structural unit derived from the (meth)acrylic acid alkyl ester (B) is contained in an amount of 20-99 mass% with respect to the total mass of the multibranched copolymer (X). The polystyrene-equivalent number average molecular weight of the multibranched copolymer (X) is 1000-50000.
