The disclosed air conditioner comprises: a compressor for compressing a refrigerant; an outdoor heat exchanger for exchanging heat with outdoor air; a first four-way valve arranged between an outlet of the compressor and an upper inlet of the outdoor heat exchanger; a second four-way valve arranged between the outlet of the compressor and a lower inlet of the outdoor heat exchanger; and a control unit electrically connected with the compressor, the first four-way valve, and the second four-way valve, wherein the control unit may control the first four-way valve and the second four-way valve such that, during a heating operation, a first defrost operation is performed, defrosting the entire outdoor heat exchanger, and, if the lower portion of the outdoor heat exchanger is in need of additional defrosting, a second defrosting operation is performed, operating the upper portion of the outdoor heat exchanger as an evaporator and the lower portion thereof as a condenser.
