Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a uniform polymeric material by, after rapidly heating a liq. reactant stream in a microwave resonant cavity, passing the reactant stream in plug flow through an annular zone to uniform the residence-time and the temperature of all volume elements of the reactant stream.
CONSTITUTION: This polymeric material is obtained by first mixing reactants in the presence of an optional solvent to obtain a liquid reactant stream, subsequently, rapidly heating the reactant stream in a resonant microwave cavity operating with microwave energy producing a TMono mode with minimum heating at a boundary in the radial direction of the stream and then, performing the reaction while passing the stream in a plug flow through an annular zone of a fixed volume. Further, a total residence-time from the time when the reactant flows in the microwave cavity to the time when the product is taken out of the annular zone, is made constant independent of mass-flow. As the reactants mentioned above, a linear polymeric diol and an organic diisocyanate are preferably used.
