Abstract:
A holographic optical element is made by placing a prism or prism variation, that is, a prism with cylindrical or other aspheric face, or an axicon in the optical system used to construct the holographic element. The effect of the prism is to continuously vary the focal length of the holographic element about one or more axes. In this way no distortion is found at playback, thus avoiding the necessity for optical correction elements. The element may be incorporated in night vision goggles.
